The Man Who Knew Too Much collection of mysteries was written by Chesterton in 1922. The eight adventures feature the activities of British sleuth Horne Fisher, the man who knew too much, and his best and most trusted friend Harold March.

Stepping Up to the Plate!

Jamie D. Grant is the man. No seriously, he is the man for this issue of Street Magic Magazine. Jamie became the de facto editor as he is next in line to take control.

So, when James left for a business trip out to meet with Cyril, Jamie stepped up to the plate and gave the rest of the crew the necessary leadership required to make this current issue a reality.

From managing the writers and contributors to assuring all of the necessary content made it in time for layout-Jamie really took the bull by the horns and made it happen. Without his direction, it wouldn’t have happened.

We’re tremendously happy with the way this issue has turned out, so make sure you say hi to Jamie and give him a well-deserved ataboy when you get a chance. This wonderful looking book, a classic of English literature recognized and enjoyed all over the world, can now be a part of your library of specially made books that help you perform wonders for friends, colleagues, or any audience you’re performing for. It can be anyone! Though you can perform with this book on its own, the genius of the gaff enables you to use this book in conjunction with any other book of your choice, gaffed or not!

Here’s how it works: the mentalist or magician talks about how Sherlock Holmes was one of the all-time best detectives in history. The performer explains how this Victorian age CSI expert would use his five senses to discover clues and induce facts that would ultimately lead him to solve crimes that stumped the famous Scotland Yard and stopped them dead in their tracks.

This person is then asked to look through the book and tell the audience how many pages there are. With nearly 300 pages to choose from, this participant is asked to choose one at random and WITHOUT LOOKING. It is a totally free choice!

The number is then revealed to the audience and the person is applauded back to their seat. Another person is then freely chosen from the audience and asked to pick up any other book sitting on a table.

There can be one or 30 books; it doesn’t matter. They can even change their mind and pick up another book. No problem! This second person is instructed to turn to the page number previously chosen at random and to being reading the page in their mind as if they were projecting it to you.

IMMEDIATELY you reveal the first word as they are getting through the first paragraph. You then being to reveal the contents of the whole first paragraph!

She is instructed to continue reading in her head. But you are able to piece things together just like Sherlock Holmes but even better. You are able to tell her about the whole page! You “see” what she is reading.

Totally self contained, ANY book can be used with the Sherlock Holmes Inductive Test. You can use as many books as you like. It can be done close-up (just carry a couple extra books for them to choose from). You can even use a spectator’s book! No kidding.

David Hoy (who performed as Dr. Faust) was a wonderful man who started out wanting to be an evangelist but turned to the world of magic and mentalism instead. Hoy believed that the best effects could be achieved by the most simple and direct methods, and we agree with him. In fact, many of today’s top mentalists have been greatly influenced by Hoy’s bold approach to the art; his contributions are legend.

So, we wanted to pay homage to the late David Hoy by revisiting his work-enter our newest creation for the magic community, X3. Similar to two of his time-honored creations, X3’s genius lays in its simplicity too; it is so simple that you’ll have a blast coming up with wonderful ways to use it in your act; it is that powerful.

Effect

Three books (Volumes I, II, and II) written by Sir Charles Eliot about Hinduism and Buddhism-certainly a topic no mentalist or magician would have difficulty building up into a wonderful effect-are sitting on a table.

Two people are asked to participate. The first is asked to choose one of the books and hold on to it; they are welcome to look through it if they like. Then, a second spectator is asked to choose from the remaining books and to randomly open up to any page in the book she likes. Once she is there, she announce the page number and you instruct the first person to begin reading the text of their book found on the page chosen and announced just moments ago by the second person.

After a suitable build up, the contents of the book are revealed…
